Spirits of the family or clan dead who receive ritual offerings from their descendants, rather than a single feared ghost. The Roman di manes gathered here are honored ancestors with an ongoing claim on the living, not a hostile presence. Excludes malevolent or restless dead, who are grouped separately as vengeful ghosts or the restless dead.
