Constitutional Provisions

A clause of a written constitution, which sits above ordinary legislation and can normally be changed only by a special procedure. That is what separates these from statutes: a provision of this kind sets the terms on which every later religious law is judged, and its meaning is worked out through decades of litigation rather than stated once. Both entries here are short passages whose interpretation has generated a jurisprudence far larger than the text.
