Cross-Traditional Roles

A tradition needs someone to perform its rites correctly, someone to speak for it under claimed inspiration, and sometimes someone to answer a specific question put to the unseen on request, and a great many traditions with no contact between them have kept those three functions distinct rather than folding them into one office. The priest's authority in this scheme is institutional: appointed or ordained to perform rites that only the office may perform, and able to lose that standing the way an ordinary office holder can. The prophet's authority is claimed rather than conferred, resting on an assertion of direct inspiration that either persuades a community or does not, and cannot be revoked by any office because no office granted it. The oracle answers a narrower brief again, consulted for a specific response rather than for ongoing religious authority; the Pythia at Delphi, consulted for centuries by individuals and by whole Greek states before major decisions, held her standing purely through the office of the shrine rather than through any personal claim to inspiration of her own.

The same three way split, an appointed office, a claimed inspiration and a consulted specialist, recurs independently across traditions this atlas records well beyond the Greek case, including several whose own ceremonial knowledge this atlas holds closed rather than described, where the underlying functional distinction still holds even though the specific practice does not appear here.
