Theravada Buddhist sites cover the oldest surviving Buddhist school, dominant across Southeast Asia and Sri Lanka, kept apart from the general Buddhist grouping the way the atlas already separates Shingon and Tendai, Japanese schools with their own distinct canons and institutions. A site belongs here when its significance is specifically Theravada practice rather than Buddhism considered without a named school, or a Mahayana or Vajrayana tradition that happens to share a region with it.
