Yama Virtues holds the five ethical restraints Patanjali's Yoga Sutras set as yoga's foundation, distinct from the type's other virtue families, each tied to a single religion rather than to a philosophical system practiced across several. Ahimsa, non injury in thought, word and deed, is the first and most far reaching of the five, underlying later Hindu, Jain and Buddhist ethics well beyond yogic practice narrowly defined.
