One card drawn for a binary answer, read as affirmative if upright and broadly favourable, negative if reversed or difficult, and conditional where the card is ambiguous. It is the most contested method in tarot and the objection to it is worth stating: the deck has no yes and no no, the reader supplies the polarity, and different readers assign different cards to different sides. Reversals themselves are an old technique, in use since the professional cartomancy of the late eighteenth century, but using a single reversal as a verdict is a much later shortcut. Many readers refuse it entirely on the grounds that any question worth asking has an answer more useful than yes. Others use it and add cards to gauge the strength or the conditions of the answer, which is a way of admitting the single card was insufficient.

The Yes/No Tarot Spread
The Yes/No spread is a tarot layout of 1 card, used for a quick binary answer to a direct question. It is the briefest form of reading, used when a plain yes or no is wanted.
How it is laid out
In this arrangement the reader deals a single card, read as affirmative when upright and favourable, negative when reversed or difficult, and conditional when ambiguous.
Tarot spreads are conventions of interpretation rather than fixed rules: each fixes a set of positions, and the card that falls in a position is read in the light of what that position is held to mean. Some layouts, such as the Celtic Cross, are long established in the twentieth-century reading tradition; others, including several themed modern spreads, are more recent inventions. The Yes/No spread is described here as one such interpretive framework within that tradition.
Binary yes-or-no tarot spreads sit somewhat uneasily against tarot's own more common self-description as a tool for reflection and nuanced insight rather than for definite prediction, and different guidebooks resolve the tension differently: some assign a fixed upright-versus-reversed rule to a single drawn card, echoing the binary logic of older coin-based and lot-casting divination methods generally, while others draw a small odd-numbered spread and read the majority orientation. Because tarot's seventy-eight cards were not designed with a built-in binary structure the way, for instance, a two-sided coin or a set of black-and-white lots are, any yes-or-no method applied to the deck is a modern interpretive overlay rather than a technique inherent to the cards themselves.
Reversals Are a Convention, Not a Property of the Deck
The Yes or No draw depends entirely on a convention that many readers do not use at all, and that is the most useful thing to know about it.
Reversed cards
Reading a card differently when it comes up upside down is a technique, adopted by some readers and rejected by others. It is not a feature of the cards. Historic Latin-suited packs were often not designed to be read in one orientation, and a great many working readers today deliberately keep their decks upright and read only by position and combination.
A layout whose answer turns on whether the card is reversed therefore does not work at all in that half of the practice, and readers who do not use reversals answer binary questions by other means, most often by the general tenor of the card or by drawing again with a differently framed question.
Provenance
No author can be identified for the layout, which is unsurprising given that it is a single card with a rule attached. The atlas records the authorship as unknown.
The framing problem
A binary answer requires a binary question, and most questions brought to a reading are not binary. Practitioners commonly report that the useful work in this draw is the reframing that happens before the card is turned, when a question that cannot be answered yes or no has to be turned into one that can, or abandoned.
