Chaturdashi is the fourteenth lunar day of the Shukla paksha, the waxing bright fortnight. It is a Rikta tithi, one of the empty group (the 4th, 9th, and 14th) generally avoided for auspicious beginnings, and its presiding deity is Shiva (Rudra) in fierce form, or Kali. Its intense quality is associated with mantra, tantra, and the worship of fierce deities rather than with gentle undertakings; it suits potent, transformative, or protective acts and the propitiation of powerful forms of the divine.

The name is the Sanskrit ordinal for the day of its fortnight, and says nothing else about it. Only the fifteenth and the thirtieth, Purnima and Amavasya, the full and the new moon, are named for what the Moon is doing rather than for their number. 3

Chaturdashi, the Eve of the Full Moon

Chaturdashi is the fourteenth tithi, falling on the eve of the full moon in the bright fortnight and the eve of the new moon in the dark. In the fivefold grouping it is a Rikta tithi, classed as generally unfavourable, and it carries a strong association with Shiva in his fierce forms: the dark-fortnight Chaturdashi of the month of Magha or Phalguna is Maha Shivaratri, the great night of Shiva, one of the most important Shaiva festivals of the year. Naraka Chaturdashi, in the dark fortnight around Diwali, is another well-known observance. The waxing Moon at the bright Chaturdashi is all but full. The panchanga treats the tithi with caution for ordinary matters while marking its powerful nocturnal festivals. These belong to the calendar and devotional tradition.

Maha Shivaratri's date, unlike most major festivals which are fixed to a tithi at sunrise or midday, is determined by which Chaturdashi prevails during the nishita kala, the deepest part of the night, typically the period around midnight, reflecting the festival's explicitly nocturnal character; a panchanga calculating the date must therefore identify the tithi in force at that specific hour rather than at any daytime reference point. Naraka Chaturdashi, by contrast, is fixed to a pre-dawn bathing ritual associated with Krishna's slaying of the demon Narakasura, and the two Chaturdashi observances, one at midnight and one before dawn, illustrate how the same numbered tithi can host festivals anchored to quite different hours of its roughly one-day span.

How Chaturdashi Is Reckoned

Behind the observance sits a piece of arithmetic. A tithi is the time the Moon takes to open a further twelve degrees of separation from the Sun. Chaturdashi occupies the arc from 156 to 168 degrees of that separation. The Moon does not move at a fixed rate, and the same twelve degrees may take a little over nineteen hours near perigee or close to twenty six near apogee. A calendar has to name whole days, so the rule is that whichever tithi is current at sunrise gives the day its name. A tithi shorter than the interval between two sunrises can therefore be skipped entirely, which the tradition calls a kshaya tithi, and one longer than that interval can carry its name over two civil days, an adhika or vriddhi tithi. Both occur in the ordinary course of a year, and both are why an observance can appear on two dates in the same almanac.

Each tithi is halved again, and each half carries a karana, so the first half of Chaturdashi carries Gara, the fifth, and the second Vanija, the merchant's karana. Seven of the eleven karanas repeat, cycling eight times through the month, while four are fixed to particular half tithis at the month's opening and close.

The Moon is waxing through this arc, setting later each evening and carrying about 98 per cent of the disc lit, all but full to the eye. That figure is a consequence of the definition rather than an observation added to it: elongation fixes the phase, so naming the tithi already names how much of the disc is lit.
