Jim is the fifth letter of the modern Arabic order and the third of the older abjad order, in which it carries the numeral value three. It shares one skeleton with ha and kha, a hooked upper stroke over a deep descending bowl, and is distinguished from them by a single dot set inside the bowl. It joins on both sides. Jim is a moon letter, so the lam of the definite article is pronounced before it. Its name descends from the Northwest Semitic gimel, whose sense was camel, although the Arabic name carries no such meaning. Its pronunciation varies more widely by region than that of any other Arabic letter, from a hard g to a soft j to a sound close to the French j.

Jim: The Fifth Letter of the Arabic Script

Jim is the fifth letter of the modern Arabic order and the third of the older abjad order, in which it carries the numeral value three. It is written as a hooked upper stroke over a deep bowl that drops below the line, with a single dot placed inside the bowl. Ha and kha share that skeleton exactly and are distinguished from jim only by their pointing, so the three letters are the standard demonstration of how the Arabic script works. It joins on both sides, and in initial and medial position the descending bowl is lost and the letter reduces to a small triangular head sitting on the line with its dot beneath.

Its name descends from the Northwest Semitic gimel and it is the direct cognate of Hebrew gimel and Syriac gamal, whose sense was camel. As with the rest of the inherited names, the meaning did not survive the journey into Arabic. What did survive is the sound, and jim varies more widely across the Arabic speaking world than any other letter: it is a hard g in Cairo, a soft j across much of the Levant and the Gulf, and a sound close to the French j in parts of North Africa and the Sudan. Standard recitation of the Quran holds to one value, which is one of the reasons the recitation disciplines exist.

One Skeleton, Three Letters

Arabic writes twenty-eight consonants with fewer than twenty distinct shapes. The gap is closed by dots, and the group of jim, ha and kha is the clearest case in the alphabet. All three are the same stroke: a hook running down into a bowl that falls below the line and curls back. Ha carries no dot at all, jim carries one dot inside the bowl, and kha carries one dot above the hook. Nothing else separates them, and in unpointed writing they are one letter.

This is a consequence of how the script arrived. The Nabataean cursive from which Arabic descends had already collapsed several distinct Aramaic letters into single shapes, and Arabic then needed to write more consonants than Aramaic had, not fewer. Rather than invent new letterforms, scribes reused the shapes they had and marked the difference with points. The same solution produced the five letter ba group, the sin and shin pair, the sad and dad pair, the ta and za pair, and the ayn and ghayn pair. Roughly half the alphabet is a pointed variant of another letter.

The consequence for reading is that Arabic dots are not diacritics in the sense that an accent is. They are part of the letter. A missing dot is not an accent left off but a different word, and the earliest Quranic manuscripts, written without consistent pointing, could be read in more ways than a fully pointed copy allows. That is a matter of record rather than of controversy, and it is one of the reasons the science of the variant readings and the chains of oral transmission carried an authority the written page could not.
