On Wings of Fire began under a different title, A Quest for Zarathustra, and its framing device was its most unusual choice: rather than telling Zoroastrian history in a straight dramatized line, director Cyrus Bharucha built the film around conductor Zubin Mehta, playing himself, traveling back to his ancestral Parsi community to learn its history as an outsider partly reconnecting with his own roots. Around Mehta's journey, the film wove dramatized sequences reaching back three thousand five hundred years, casting Nigel Terry as Zarathustra and Derek Jacobi as narrator, with a supporting cast that included Saeed Jaffrey and Amrish Puri, two of Indian cinema's most recognizable actors, in smaller historical roles.
The film premiered at Mumbai's Sterling Cinema in June 1986, produced by Meherji K. Madan through Persepolis Productions, a title that gestures at the same Achaemenid capital whose ruins carry Zoroastrianism's own best known winged emblem. It would not reach American audiences for another fifteen years, receiving a United States release only in 2001.
Between those two dates sits the controversy the film is now best remembered for within the Parsi community: objections from religious authority over its portrayal of Zarathustra as an enlightened philosopher rather than a divine figure, aired in the press within weeks of the Mumbai premiere and, more formally, in the community journal Parsiana. No source consulted for this entry records a later reconciliation between the filmmakers and the priests who objected, or any revision made in response. The film's American release fifteen years on appears to have arrived on its own timeline, unconnected to any resolution of the dispute that met it at home.
