Type Seven, the Enthusiast or Epicure, is placed in the head triad with Five and Six, and its strategy for handling fear is to keep moving toward the pleasant and away from anything painful. Its basic desire is to be satisfied and content, its basic fear is of being deprived, trapped in pain or missing out. Its passion is gluttony, meant in the broad sense of an appetite for experience rather than for food, and its virtue is sobriety. Its wings are Six and Eight. Under stress the system places Seven at One, becoming critical and rigid; in growth it moves to Five, becoming able to go deep into one thing rather than skimming many.
In the Hornevian groups, Riso and Hudson's second classification drawn from Karen Horney's three neurotic trends, Seven falls among the assertive types that move against others, alongside Three and Eight, since its restless pursuit of the next pleasant option is read as an active, forward-pressing strategy rather than a compliant or withdrawn one. Naranjo's instinctual subtypes cross each type with one of three biological drives, self-preservation, social and one-to-one (sexual). For Seven these give the self-preservation Gourmand, focused on family and the pleasures of a well-stocked table; the social Sacrifice type, who gives up personal pleasure for a larger vision; and the one-to-one Adventurer, whose fascination and suggestibility chase the next enthralling possibility.
