A young man of the Ansar of Medina who became one of the scribes who wrote down revelation for Muhammad, and afterwards the central figure in gathering the Quran into a single written text. The tradition has Abu Bakr commissioning him to collect the scattered material after reciters were killed at al-Yamama, and Uthman later placing him at the head of the commission that produced the codex sent out to the garrison cities. He was also remembered as the leading authority of his generation on the law of inheritance. Almost everything known about him comes from inside the Muslim biographical tradition, which is also the tradition that made his role central.

The Making of a Written Quran

The Quran was recited before it was a book, and the move from one to the other is described in the Muslim tradition as two operations with Zayd ibn Thabit at the centre of both. The first, under Abu Bakr, gathered material written on whatever had been to hand, palm stalks, thin stones, shoulder blades, scraps of parchment, together with what was held in memory, into a single set of sheets kept afterwards by Hafsa. The second, some twenty years later under Uthman, produced a standard consonantal text from those sheets, copied it, and sent the copies to the garrison cities with instructions that competing written versions be withdrawn.

Zayd was young for the first task and senior for the second, where he headed a commission whose other members were Qurashi. The tradition records a working rule for disputed passages, that the usage of Quraysh was to be preferred because the revelation had come in their speech. It also records that he did not welcome the assignment, replying that moving a mountain would have been lighter work.

The manuscript evidence and the tradition are broadly consistent about the outcome. The earliest substantial Quranic manuscripts show a stable consonantal skeleton across widely separated copies, which is what a centrally issued standard would produce, though exactly how the standardisation was carried out remains an active field.

What the Biographical Tradition Can and Cannot Show

Zayd belonged to the Ansar, the Medinan supporters, of the clan of Najjar, and he was a boy when Muhammad arrived in the city. The tradition says he was too young to fight at Badr and was turned back, and that he was set to learn the script used by the Jews of Medina so that correspondence could be handled without an intermediary, which he did in a matter of weeks. He served the caliphs afterwards as a secretary and was left in charge of Medina when Umar travelled.

He is also remembered as the leading authority of his generation on the division of estates, a technical subject with a great deal of arithmetic in it, and later works on inheritance cite him constantly. He was close to Uthman, and during the civil wars that followed he kept out of the fighting.

All of this comes from inside a single tradition. The biographical literature that preserves it was compiled by scholars for whom the authority of the Quranic text mattered enormously, and one named collector working under two caliphs is a cleaner account of transmission than a diffuse one would be. That is not an argument that the account is false. It is a reason to notice that no independent source exists to test it against, and to say so rather than present the story as though it were corroborated.
