Left Angle Cross of the Alpha (41/31)

The Left Angle Cross of the Alpha carries the same pair as the Cross of Influence with sun and earth exchanged, Gate 41 and Gate 31. Human Design reads Gate 41, from Hexagram 41, Decrease, sitting in the Root, as fantasy and anticipation, the pressure of feeling that starts a new cycle before there is anything yet to experience, now the more exposed gate; and Gate 31, from Hexagram 31, Influence, sitting in the Throat, as leadership through influence, the voice others elect to follow. It belongs to the Left Angle family, read as transpersonal, a direction practitioners describe as answering less to personal choice than to what circumstance hands the individual.

Its design half is Gate 44 and Gate 24, also exchanged. Gate 44 sits in the Spleen and is read as an instinctive memory for people and patterns, a nose for who can be relied on; it pairs with Gate 26 in the channel of Surrender. Gate 24 sits in the Ajna and is read as a mind circling the same thought repeatedly until it finally resolves; it pairs with Gate 61 in the channel of Awareness.

Putting anticipation ahead of the elected voice changes what this cross puts forward first, while the same instinctive trust and returning mind sit beneath it regardless of order. The same pair, unreversed, also underlies the Juxtaposition Cross of Fantasy, and appears as the Juxtaposition Cross of Influence. The numbers are inherited from the I Ching; reading them as one cross belongs to the modern reading, not the classical one.

This Left Angle Cross of the Alpha completes its two role arrangements with this ordering, Gate 41 and Gate 31 exposed, an unbegun cycle ahead of the elected voice. Its first article reads Gate 41 as fantasy and anticipation, the pressure of feeling that starts a new cycle before there is anything yet to experience, now the more exposed gate, and Gate 31 as leadership through influence, the voice others elect to follow. What it does not trace is where the four gates sit on the wheel itself, the Human Design mandala's division of its sixty four gates into four Quarters, and by that measure this ordering draws one gate from each of the four.

Gate 41, the personality gate here, falls in the Quarter of Mutation, purpose fulfilled through transformation. Gate 31, its personality partner, falls in the Quarter of Civilization, purpose fulfilled through form. Behind them, Gate 44 falls in the Quarter of Duality, purpose fulfilled through bonding, and Gate 24 falls in the Quarter of Initiation, purpose fulfilled through mind.

So the anticipated cycle and the elected voice the first article reads on this ordering's surface answer to the arcs of transformation and form, while the instinctive trust and the returning mind beneath them answer to the arcs of bonding and mind, the same four arcs the earlier ordering of the Alpha also draws on however its two pairs are assigned to personality and design. With both arrangements in place, the Alpha's two gate pairs share the same wheel wide spread, one gate from each Quarter regardless of order.
