A Sumerian narrative poem in which the goddess Inanna descends to the realm of her sister Ereshkigal, is stripped of her regalia at each of seven gates, and is killed and hung on a hook. Revived by creatures the god Enki fashions to smuggle in the food and water of life, she may only leave the underworld by naming a substitute, and chooses her husband Dumuzi. Later scholarship reads the arrangement that follows, in which Dumuzi and his sister Geshtinanna alternate half the year in the underworld, as an origin story for the seasonal cycle of vegetation.

At each of the seven gates of the underworld Inanna passes through, the gatekeeper Neti removes one article of her royal regalia in turn, her crown, her jewelry, her breastplate and her royal robe among them, so that she arrives before Ereshkigal naked and bowed low, stripped of every symbol of her power one gate at a time. 1

The Akkadian Descent of Ishtar is a shorter, more compressed retelling of the same underworld journey and omits the Sumerian poem's extended Dumuzi subplot almost entirely, closing instead with only a brief, obscure reference to mourning rites for Tammuz. 1

Inanna, queen of heaven, resolves to abandon her earthly domains and travel to the underworld, the land of no return, ruled by her older sister Ereshkigal, queen of the dead. Before leaving, she instructs her minister Ninshubur that if she does not return, Ninshubur must appeal in turn to the gods Enlil, Nanna, and Enki for help freeing her. At the outer gate, the gatekeeper Neti admits her only on Ereshkigal's order, and at each of the seven gates that follow, Inanna must remove one piece of her royal regalia, her crown, her jewelry, her breastplate, her royal robe, until she arrives before Ereshkigal's throne stripped of all power and status.

The seven judges of the underworld, the Anunnaki, fix the look of death upon her, and Ereshkigal hangs her corpse on a hook on the wall. When Inanna fails to return after three days, Ninshubur carries out her instructions; Enlil and Nanna refuse to interfere, but Enki fashions two small sexless creatures from the dirt beneath his fingernails and sends them into the underworld carrying the food and water of life, instructing them to agree with Ereshkigal's every complaint of pain as a way past her guard. Moved by their strange sympathy, Ereshkigal grants them Inanna's corpse, and they revive her with Enki's provisions.

Dumuzi, Geshtinanna, and the Seasons

The underworld's law, however, is that no one may leave it without providing a substitute to take their place, and Inanna is escorted back to the world of the living by a troop of demons whose task is to drag someone down in her stead. Passing through her cities, she finds her officials and courtiers in mourning for her, and spares them each in turn, but when she reaches her own husband, the shepherd god Dumuzi, she finds him seated on her throne in fine clothes, showing no sign of grief at all. Enraged, she fixes the demons' gaze on him, and Dumuzi is dragged down to the underworld in her place, despite his sister Geshtinanna's attempts to hide and then to substitute herself for him.

The poem's final resolution, recorded in a separate but related text, has Geshtinanna successfully negotiate a compromise: she and Dumuzi will each spend half the year in the underworld and half above, alternating so that neither is permanently absent from the world of the living. Assyriologists and comparative mythologists have long read this alternating absence and return as a Mesopotamian etiology for the agricultural cycle, mapping Dumuzi's time below onto the dry season when shepherding and grain both fail, though the Sumerian sources themselves do not spell out that equation as explicitly as later comparative scholarship sometimes implies.
