Michigan History Center (institutional record)

Michigan History Center, cited here as an institutional record, is the State of Michigan's own account of its role as the state's official history museum and archive and its custody of the Michigan Relics, a large group of inscribed clay and slate objects found in Michigan in the late nineteenth century and now generally regarded by archaeologists as an elaborate forgery. The center operates under the state government with professional archival standards, so its record of what it holds and how it came to hold it is reliable as an institutional fact. Its limit is custodial, not evaluative: cite it for what the center holds; the objects' now well established status as forgeries needs the archaeological literature that established it.
