Planet Paths gathers the seven paths of the Kabbalistic Tree of Life assigned to the Double letters of the Hebrew alphabet, each carrying one of the seven classical planets known before the telescope.
Path 12, letter Beth and Mercury, joins Kether to Binah, the will beginning to act and take a shape it can inhabit. Path 13, letter Gimel and the Moon, is the central path straight down the Middle Pillar from Kether to Tiphareth, crossing the Abyss, the deepest interior journey of the scheme. Path 14, letter Daleth and Venus, joins Chokmah to Binah, the meeting of force and form. Path 21, letter Kaph and Jupiter, joins Chesed to Netzach, the turning wheel of fortune through which abundance flows down. Path 27, letter Peh and Mars, crosses between Netzach and Hod, upheaval and the liberation that follows it. Path 30, letter Resh and the Sun, joins Hod to Yesod, the stage of clarity and joyful illumination. Path 32, letter Tav and Saturn, is the lowest of all thirty two, joining Yesod to Malkuth, the first step the ascending initiate treads out of the material kingdom.
All seven belong to the Sefer Yetzirah's original scheme of thirty two paths, a text Gershom Scholem places between the second and sixth centuries CE, surviving in recensions that do not fully agree. Their pairing with tarot trumps, from The Magician on Path 12 to The World on Path 32, entered Kabbalistic use through Eliphas Levi's nineteenth century synthesis of Kabbalah and tarot; the attributions this atlas records descend from the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn's own ceremonial scheme, fixed by the mid 1890s.
