This group holds the movements that reformed an existing tradition from within, among them the Protestant Reformation, the Bhakti movement, the founding of the Arya Samaj and the Brahmo Samaj, and Japan's Shinbutsu Bunri separation of kami and buddha worship. It excludes revivals, where the change was a resurgence of existing devotional practice rather than a restructuring of doctrine or institutions.
