This group holds the foods and drinks no kitchen has ever produced: substances ascribed to gods or granted by them, credited with immortality, poetic inspiration, or ecstatic vision rather than nourishment. Ambrosia, soma, and haoma belong here precisely because they are mythic rather than culinary, in contrast to the fasting dishes, feast dishes, and offerings catalogued as food, which real households actually prepare.
