Foundational works of the Chinese canon, authoritative for a civilization before they are authoritative for any single religious community. The I Ching, consulted as a divination manual and read as a cosmology, and the Liji, the Classic of Rites, are here. Both stood at the centre of the examination curriculum for close to two millennia, and the I Ching is read by Confucian and Daoist commentators alike. The modern classics of natural theology and Transcendentalism that once sat in this group are now under Other Writings.
