The 118 confirmed elements of the modern periodic table, entered here under their standard chemical identity: atomic number, symbol and group. Several, chiefly the seven metals known to antiquity, gold, silver, iron, copper, tin, mercury and lead, carry a second, older identity as well, tied to a planet and worked in the alchemical tradition long before atomic theory existed. The rest of the table has no such history and is included here for completeness of the modern chemical account. Where a correspondence is later folklore rather than a documented historical practice, the entry says so rather than presenting it as ancient.

A periodic element entry records one of the chemical elements of the periodic table specifically for its place in the history of alchemy and esoteric thought, rather than as a chemistry reference does. Before the modern periodic table existed, the same substances now called elements, mercury, sulfur, gold, lead among them, carried symbolic and spiritual meanings within alchemical traditions that treated the work of refining a physical substance as inseparable from the refining of the soul that performed it.

Each entry records an element's alchemical symbol where a distinct one exists, since alchemical texts used a specialized graphic notation rather than the modern letter based symbols chemistry now uses, along with any planetary correspondence assigned to it, since Western alchemy traditionally paired specific metals with specific planets, gold with the sun and silver with the moon among the clearest examples.

The entry also records an element's place in the modern periodic table itself, its atomic number and its natural abundance, since a full picture of what a substance meant to an alchemical tradition requires knowing what it actually is chemically as well as what earlier practitioners, working without that knowledge, believed it to be and why they believed it.

The periodic table now used to organize every element on the atlas descends from the work of the Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev, who published his first version in 1869 after noticing that arranging the known elements by atomic weight produced a table in which elements with similar chemical properties fell into recurring, regularly spaced columns. Mendeleev's boldest move was leaving deliberate gaps in his table for elements not yet discovered, and predicting the properties those missing elements would turn out to have.

Those predictions were tested within his own lifetime. Gallium, discovered in 1875, and germanium, discovered in 1886, both matched Mendeleev's predicted properties closely enough to convince most remaining skeptics that his arrangement reflected a genuine underlying order rather than a convenient bookkeeping scheme, and the periodic table has been revised and extended many times since without ever abandoning that same basic organizing logic.

Mendeleev's own path to the idea drew, by his own account, on years of trying to teach chemistry in a way students could actually retain, and the table's origin as a teaching tool is easy to forget once a version of it hangs on the wall of nearly every chemistry classroom in the world, treated today as simple settled fact rather than as the hard won result of one chemist's long search for an underlying pattern.
