Novels, poems and plays that engage a religious tradition, text or figure as their own encyclopedia subject: their authorship, their publication history and the religious content they carry, argue with or dramatize. This is distinct from the scripture and esoteric text types, which hold the religious texts a tradition itself regards as scripture or teaching, and from the hymn type, which holds liturgical and devotional texts a tradition actually recites or sings. A work here is read and studied as literature, a human author's own creation engaging religious material from outside a tradition's own canon, however devoutly or however critically. Milton's Paradise Lost sits here for exactly that reason: a poet's epic retelling of the Fall of Man, not the Book of Genesis itself.

What a Literary Work Entry Covers

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

A literary work entry records a work of literature, a novel, a poem, an epic, a devotional or theological work written with literary craft as a deliberate part of its purpose, that engages religion as its subject, distinct from the atlas's Scripture entries in never having been received by any tradition as revealed or canonical text. The Cambridge Companion to Literature and Religion treats this pairing, a specific text alongside the specific tradition it draws on or argues with, as the right unit of study, rather than treating literature and religion as two separate subjects that merely happen to overlap occasionally.

An entry records a work's author, its language, its place and period of origin, and, where it is documented, how it was received by scholars and by readers within the tradition it engages, since a literary work's religious content can be read very differently by a scholar of literature, a scholar of the tradition it depicts, and an ordinary reader from within that tradition, and those readings are frequently worth recording as three separate, not necessarily agreeing, facts.

The Companion deliberately covers Dharmic and Abrahamic traditions on equal footing rather than treating Christian literature as the default case, a discipline this type's entries try to match, describing a given work's religious content in the vocabulary and categories of the tradition it actually engages rather than importing a single tradition's assumptions onto every other one.

Reading Sacred and Devotional Literature Comparatively

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Comparing how literature and religion intersect across very different traditions carries the same risk comparative religion runs more generally: a category built from familiar, often Christian, literary history, the confessional narrative, the devotional lyric, gets applied to a tradition that organizes its own religious writing along genuinely different lines, and the comparison ends up finding a familiar shape where the tradition's own readers would not recognize one.

The corrective is the same discipline comparative religion scholarship has settled on elsewhere: describing a literary work first in the terms its own tradition and its own readers actually use, what genre it belongs to by that tradition's own reckoning, what devotional or doctrinal work it is understood to do, and only afterward asking carefully what, if anything, genuinely lines up with how another tradition's literature works.

A literary work entry tries to hold that same line, recording what a work's own tradition understands it to be doing before reaching for a comparison to another tradition's literature, since a comparison made too early tends to manufacture a resemblance neither tradition's own readers would actually claim, flattening two genuinely different literary and religious projects into one that fits neither.
