The bodies that carried these traditions, and the ones that set out to test them. Learned societies, research laboratories, universities, publishing houses and religious institutions all belong here, because an institution is a subject in its own right and not merely a footnote to the people in it. The atlas already had somewhere to file a secret society and somewhere to record who holds an artifact, but nowhere for the Society for Psychical Research or a university laboratory, which meant a great deal of documented history had no anchor. Each entry gives what the body was founded to do, when, by whom, and what became of it.

The Study of Religious Organizations: History and Method

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Formal religious organization is old, and it takes documented shapes long before any modern legal system asks a group to register. The Buddhist sangha organized itself under the vinaya, a body of monastic rules governing ordination, property and discipline that predates any state recognition of it. The Catholic Church built its own canon law and a hierarchy of dioceses and religious orders across centuries of internal development. Jewish communities historically governed themselves through the kehillah, a recognized communal body handling everything from charity to dispute resolution. Islamic institutions were commonly funded and structured through the waqf, an endowment dedicating property in perpetuity to a mosque, school or charitable purpose. Each of these predates, and in several cases shaped, the modern idea of a religious organization as a legal entity.

Comparative sociology of religion built its own vocabulary for describing how such organizations differ and change over time. Max Weber and Ernst Troeltsch developed the church-sect distinction, contrasting an inclusive body that accommodates the surrounding society with a smaller, more demanding group defined against it, and H. Richard Niebuhr later argued that many groups begin as a sect and settle into a third pattern, the denomination, as a movement institutionalizes across generations, gains members born into it rather than converted, and moderates its original stance toward the wider world.

A newer layer sits on top of that older institutional history: modern states increasingly require a religious organization to register as a charity or nonprofit to gain tax status and legal standing, which means an organization's documented history now often includes both its own internal governance record and a separate public regulatory record, two sources that do not always describe the same organization the same way and are read against each other rather than treated as interchangeable.

What an Organization Is in the Atlas

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

An organization, in the atlas's own vocabulary, is an institution: a body with a leadership, a charter and a continuing existence, rather than a belief, a practice or a person. The type holds religious governing bodies and orders, the missionary and relief agencies a denomination or a religious community operates, learned and research societies that study religious and paranormal phenomena, and government bodies, national waqf authorities and religious affairs ministries prominent among them, that regulate religious property and institutions on a state's behalf. What unites the group is institutional continuity: an organization outlives the individuals who lead it and is described here by its founding, its charter and its recorded scope of work, distinct from the denomination or tradition it may serve, which is its own entity and usually its own separate entry.

Scholars of religion have long distinguished this institutional layer from belief and practice for the same reason the atlas does: a religious body's doctrine and a religious body's administration are separable questions. An inquiry into how a tradition organizes itself, who governs it, who funds it, who carries out its charitable and educational work, answers a different question than an inquiry into what it teaches, and the atlas keeps the two apart for the same reason a reader would.
