I Ching: The Classic of Changes, translated with an introduction and commentary, the first English translation of the newly discovered second-century BC Mawangdui texts

Edward L. Shaughnessy's translation was the first English rendering of the Mawangdui silk manuscript version of the I Ching, texts excavated from a sealed second century BC tomb that predate the received text used by most other English translations. This atlas leaves the publication year blank deliberately because catalogue records themselves disagree between 1996 and 1997 for the first edition, an unresolved discrepancy stated honestly rather than guessed at. That direct grounding in a specific, datable excavated manuscript is the translation's real evidentiary basis. Use it for the Mawangdui manuscript version specifically, which in places differs from the more commonly read received text.
