The official register maintained by UNESCO's World Heritage Centre of the sites the World Heritage Committee has inscribed, carrying the organization's own statement of a site's inscription date, the criteria it was listed under and its stated outstanding universal value. As an official designation record from a reputable international institution, rather than independent peer reviewed scholarship, it sits at this atlas's middle tier. It is the right source for a site's World Heritage status and inscription details, including precisely which name, year and criteria a site was inscribed under and whether a site stands on the List of World Heritage in Danger, since inscription is the Committee's own act and this register is its primary record of that act. It is not a scholarly history of the site itself or of the traditions associated with it, which needs a dedicated historical or archaeological source. This atlas separately records twenty-three further individual World Heritage List inscriptions besides this general record, among them Petra, Baalbek, Olympia, Delos, Timbuktu, Great Zimbabwe, the Sacred Mijikenda Kaya Forests, the Royal Palaces of Abomey, the Site of Palmyra, the Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range and the Routes of Santiago de Compostela; each is one entry in this same continuously maintained register, so citing this general record alongside one of those entries, or citing two of those entries together, for the same claim is UNESCO's own institutional voice appearing more than once, not two independent lines of evidence. This record merges what were briefly two atlas entries citing the identical whc.unesco.org list page: this general register and a second record that described the Committee's own inscription decisions and the List of World Heritage in Danger specifically, and was cited across this atlas for precise inscription years for exactly that reason; that record is retired into this one.

Facts
Assessment
Reliability Tier
2
The official register maintained by UNESCO itself of a site's inscription date and the criteria under which it was listed, an authoritative designation record rather than an independent scholarly history of the site or its traditions, which is why it sits below the top tier.
Notes
The official register maintained by UNESCO of World Heritage Sites, carrying the organization's own statements of a site's inscription date, selection criteria and outstanding universal value, including which sites stand on the List of World Heritage in Danger. Use for a site's World Heritage status, inscription year and the criteria under which it was listed; it is an official designation record, not a scholarly history of the site or the traditions associated with it. This record merges what were briefly two atlas entries citing the identical whc.unesco.org list page: this general register record and a second, more narrowly framed record describing the Committee's own inscription decisions, cited across this atlas for precise inscription years; that entry is retired into this one, and its citing facts move here with it.
