Origin 1987

Gate 34 sits in the Sacral centre and carries what Human Design treats as pure power, energy that is most potent when it is simply busy being itself rather than being aimed at anyone. Its number belongs to the thirty-fourth hexagram, The Power of the Great, whose image is thunder in heaven and whose repeated counsel is that great power is dangerous without correctness. Structurally the gate is unusual: it has three channels, to Gates 10, 20 and 57, and belongs to the closed group of four Integration gates. That architecture is Ra Uru Hu's, and the warning it carries, that this power is not designed to help others, is his too.

Great Power is gate 34 of the sixty-four gates of the Human Design system, corresponding to Hexagram 34, Great Power of the I Ching; the system itself was synthesized in 1987 out of the I Ching, the chakra teaching, Kabbalah and astrology. 2

The I Ching of China, the chakra teaching of India, Kabbalah and astrology are drawn on here inside a scheme assembled in 1987 and offered as an instrument of psychological counselling. The four traditions it draws on are old; the arrangement that joins them is not, and none of them produced it. 2

The Integration Channels

Most of the bodygraph works by connection between distant parts: a gate in the Root reaching a gate in the Spleen, a Sacral gate reaching the Throat. Four gates do something different, and they are the most distinctive piece of structure in the whole diagram.

Gates 10, 20, 34 and 57 connect only to each other. Every possible pairing among the four is a real channel, giving six: 10-20, 10-34, 10-57, 20-34, 20-57 and 34-57. Practitioners call these the Integration channels, and the group is closed in a way nothing else in the graph is.

What the four bring together is unusual. Gate 34 sits in the Sacral and is treated as pure undirected power. Gate 57 sits in the Spleen and carries instantaneous intuitive awareness. Gate 20 sits in the Throat and carries expression in the present moment. Gate 10 sits in the identity centre and carries behaviour true to itself. Power, awareness, voice and self, wired directly together with nothing else intervening.

Human Design reads this cluster as concerned with individual survival rather than with relationship, and holds that its characteristic quality is being fully present and self-sufficient rather than useful to anyone else. Gate 34 in particular is described as power that is not designed to help, which is an unusual thing for a system of this kind to say.

Structurally the arrangement is elegant, and it is worth being clear about where it comes from. The King Wen numbers 10, 20, 34 and 57 have no particular relationship to one another in the I Ching, where they are Treading, Contemplation, The Power of the Great and The Gentle. Their grouping into a closed quartet is entirely Ra Uru Hu's design decision, made in 1987.

Type, Strategy and Authority

The gates are the fine detail of a chart. The level at which Human Design is actually used by most practitioners is coarser, and it is worth setting out because the entries in this set sit inside it.

From the pattern of defined and undefined centres, the system derives a type. There are four, with one subdivided: Manifestor, Generator with the sub-type Manifesting Generator, Projector, and Reflector. Type is determined mechanically from which centres are defined and which motors connect to the Throat, so two people with very different gate activations can share a type.

Each type is given a strategy, a rule about how to engage with the world. Manifestors are told to inform before acting. Generators and Manifesting Generators are told to wait to respond rather than initiating. Projectors are told to wait for invitation. Reflectors, who have no defined centres at all and are rare, are told to wait a full lunar cycle before major decisions.

Each chart also has an authority, which is the part of the body the system holds should make decisions: emotional authority where the Solar Plexus is defined, sacral authority where the Sacral is defined and the Solar Plexus is not, and several less common forms below that. The consistent instruction is that the mind is not the authority; it is treated as a good adviser to others and an unreliable decision-maker for oneself.

Practitioners describe the whole of this as an experiment to be run over time rather than a set of claims to be believed, and Ra Uru Hu framed it that way himself. The framing is worth noting because it is unusual: the system asks to be tested by the individual rather than accepted, while making no provision for testing it any other way.
